Ignite the Cancer Conversation

As a survivor, an advocate, a medical professional, a community leader, a concerned citizen, we invite you to join the conversation as we discuss numerous facets of the cancer dilemma.

The Beyond Pink TEAM, in collaboration with the University of Northern Iowa’s Recycling and Reuse Technology Transfer Center (RRTTC), present Ignite the Cancer Conversation: Book Club Edition beginning in February. Ignite the Cancer Conversation is a unique forum that will “ignite the cancer conversation” by going beyond awareness, early detection, and treatment to addressing ways to end all cancers.

Over the course of three months participants will read The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee. Participants will have the option to meet online or in person at the Cedar Falls Public Library from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. on the following Monday nights: February 5th, February 26th, March 26th, and April 16th. Participation in the book club is completely free, but participants must provide their own book.

“This event is for anyone who is interested in learning about cancer. Our goal is to bring diverse communities together to learn about the history of cancer and activate a conversation that will initiate concrete steps to conquer cancer,” commented Dee Hughes, Beyond Pink TEAM President.

“The Emperor of All Maladies reads like a thrilling novel, with scientific triumphs and setbacks, personal rivalries, and alliances. But set against the backdrop of changing politics and social values, it is also a history of human civilization seen through the prism of cancer, the world’s most pervasive, tenacious disease. It is an illuminating book that provides hope and clarity to those seeking to demystify cancer.” – Scribner Publishing

Here’s a tentative schedule of all the book club sessions:

Feb. 5: Prologue and Part 1

Feb 26: Part 2 and 3

Mar 26: Part 4

April 16: Part 5, 6, and Atossa’s War, and Wrap-Up
