Surviving Cancer Survivorship

Gabbi : June 6, 2012 1:18 pm : Events, From the Team, Young Cancer Survivors

Young cancer survivors meet at an event sponsored by Beyond Pink TEAM.

Having a diagnosis of cancer can be pretty scary.  Friends and family rally around you during your diagnosis and treatment. Then once you become a survivor, you have to learn to live in what is now your “new normal.”  This is something very few people understand…unless they have lived with cancer themselves. The Beyond Pink TEAM is hosting an event for women living beyond cancer so they can meet others who have been there too.

The Beyond Pink TEAM is hosting a “Meet, Mingle and Learn” event Tuesday, June 19, 2012 from 4:30-7p.m.  Nancy McHone, RN Educator and Cancer Program Coordinator at Covenant Treatment Center, will speak about surviving and thriving after cancer. Her topic “Some Things You Need to Know About Survivorship” will touch on how to adjust to life following cancer treatment. This topic is open to women living with cancer, and their families or caregivers.

The event is FREE and open to women living with any cancer diagnosis.  Participants are encouraged to bring a friend, family member or caregiver to attend with them. Child care will be provided.  It is scheduled for Tuesday, June 19 at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 3912 Cedar Heights Drive, Cedar Falls. (Please note: this is the new location for Meet, Mingle and Learn!)

This FREE event is open to all young women living with cancer.  Activities are planned from 4:30 to 7 p.m., but participants can come and go as their schedules allow. There will be refreshments available courtesy of Panera Bread Bakery- Café. The schedule for the evening is:

  • 4:30-5p.m.    Registration, Refreshments, and Sharing
  • 5-6 p.m.        Small Group Table Discussions
  • 6-6:45 p.m.  “Some Things You Need to Know About Survivorship” by Nancy McHone RN, MSN, OCN
  • 6:45-7 p.m.   Wrap-up and Evaluations

My Experience with the NBCC conference and Lobby Day

Jeanne Rothamel (L) and Christine Carpenter (R) meet with Senator Tom Harkin while lobbying in Washington D.C.

The educational opportunities were amazing at the NBCC conference.  Not just from the medical side, but from the professional woman aspect.  The small group meetings with the speakers offered the opportunity to comfortably ask questions of the researchers and physicians.  Lobby Day was a new experience for me, becoming more comfortable as the day progressed.  My medical background proved beneficial.  We were welcomed into each meeting, the aides and congressmen were very receptive, making for a positive experience.  It was good to be an Iowan that day and I was happy to be a part of the BPT contingent. – Jeanne Rothamel

New Advocate Travels to Washington DC

Gabbi : May 29, 2013 3:09 pm : Advocacy, From the Team, Uncategorized

I recently returned from my first National Breast Cancer Coalition Advocacy Summit in Washington, DC.

Washington DC 2013-3

BPT Advocates L-R: Jeanne Rothamel, Lori Seawel, Kristin Tieg Torres and Dee Hughes

During the inspiring 4 day experience I learned from leading world scientists that we will find a cure for Breast Cancer using innovative, evidence based research.
NBCC has established an umbrella organization called The Artemis Project where researchers and scientists come together, share their knowledge and research projects to work on the common goal of ending breast cancer.
They are currently 2-3 years away from starting clinical trials for a Breast Cancer Vaccine.

All of the past funding, pink ribbons and promotions haven’t kept people from dying of Breast Cancer.  The mortality rate from Breast Cancer has only been reduced slightly, one person dies every 14 minutes from the disease.

We all need to support NBCC and their goal to end Breast Cancer by the year 2020.  For our sake, our children’s sake and the entire world – we cannot wait.

Fundraiser

2012 Plant it Pink Campaign

Gabbi : June 27, 2012 5:34 pm : Events, From the Team, Fundraiser, Uncategorized

There’s still time to be thinking pink and planting pink! The Plant It Pink: Hope Blooms for Breast Cancer campaign is taking orders through August 17 for its fifth year of sales to raise funds for the Beyond Pink TEAM while creating awareness and support for those living with breast cancer in the Cedar Valley.

Above tulips were purchased from a previous BPT Plant it Pink Campaign by Mercy Hospital in Oelwein as part of their Remembrance Garden.

The Beyond Pink TEAM’s Plant it Pink campaign is designed to increase breast cancer awareness by ‘planting the Cedar Valley pink.’  This year the committee is selling the Tulip Angelique tulip which is “a flawless, pale rose beauty with darker rose flushes and pale creamy pink edges,” and the Tulip Innuendo which is reported to be a “hybrid that is whisper-pink with spreading, luminous magenta petal edges. It’s a large flower with a strong stem.”

Orders are being taken through August 17, 2012.  Flower bulbs can be purchased $10/dozen bulbs, $40/50 bulbs or $75/100 bulbs. Bulbs can be picked up October 8, 2011 at the Covenant Cancer Treatment Center, 200 E. Ridgeway Ave. in Waterloo from 8 to 10 AM only.

Order your bulbs now, plant them during Breast Cancer Awareness Month – October, 2012, and then in Spring, 2013 enjoy the flower beds brimming with beautiful pink tulips.  This is a wonderful opportunity for groups, companies, churches or individuals to join in and show your support for all those affected by breast cancer and your hope for a breast cancer free generation.

The order form can be downloaded here. (AS OF JULY 2013, THIS IS NOT A CURRENT ORDER FORM- PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR CURRENT ORDER FORM.) For more information about placing orders for bulbs call Nancy McHone at 272-2841. All proceeds from the Beyond Pink TEAM’s Plant it Pink sales stay local and are used to provide financial assistance to women with breast cancer as well as other projects of the Beyond Pink TEAM.

The Beyond Pink TEAM is a program of the Cedar Valley Cancer Committee, a non-profit organization made possible by the collaborative efforts of many health organizations, businesses and dedicated individuals’ throughout theCedarValley.  Going beyond pink ribbons, beyond pink light bulbs, beyond pink trinkets; Beyond Pink, we accomplish our mission by Taking action, Education, Advocating and Making a difference.

Logan Avenue HyVee Thinks Big for the Beyond Pink TEAM

Gabbi : December 16, 2011 6:46 pm : Uncategorized

The Beyond Pink TEAM was pleasantly surprised to find out that the Logan Avenue HyVee had been holding fundrasiers all fall in honor of an employee Carin who is a cancer survivor.

Carin wanted to make sure that the money raised stayed in our community, and asked HyVee staff to donate to the Beyond Pink TEAM. The result was a check presentation of over $1300!

Beyond Pink TEAM members Jane Clark and Gabbi DeWitt are surrounded by Logan Avenue HyVee staff.

HyVee employees have shown that you don’t have to be big, to think big. They put their store manager on the roof and people could donate to either keep him up there, or let him come down. They also had bake sales within the employee lounge and had other donation opportunities. They plan to do more events in the future. We hope their ideas spark ideas in other businesses as well.
