2012 Plant it Pink Campaign

Gabbi : June 27, 2012 5:34 pm : Events, From the Team, Fundraiser, Uncategorized

There’s still time to be thinking pink and planting pink! The Plant It Pink: Hope Blooms for Breast Cancer campaign is taking orders through August 17 for its fifth year of sales to raise funds for the Beyond Pink TEAM while creating awareness and support for those living with breast cancer in the Cedar Valley.

Above tulips were purchased from a previous BPT Plant it Pink Campaign by Mercy Hospital in Oelwein as part of their Remembrance Garden.

The Beyond Pink TEAM’s Plant it Pink campaign is designed to increase breast cancer awareness by ‘planting the Cedar Valley pink.’  This year the committee is selling the Tulip Angelique tulip which is “a flawless, pale rose beauty with darker rose flushes and pale creamy pink edges,” and the Tulip Innuendo which is reported to be a “hybrid that is whisper-pink with spreading, luminous magenta petal edges. It’s a large flower with a strong stem.”

Orders are being taken through August 17, 2012.  Flower bulbs can be purchased $10/dozen bulbs, $40/50 bulbs or $75/100 bulbs. Bulbs can be picked up October 8, 2011 at the Covenant Cancer Treatment Center, 200 E. Ridgeway Ave. in Waterloo from 8 to 10 AM only.

Order your bulbs now, plant them during Breast Cancer Awareness Month – October, 2012, and then in Spring, 2013 enjoy the flower beds brimming with beautiful pink tulips.  This is a wonderful opportunity for groups, companies, churches or individuals to join in and show your support for all those affected by breast cancer and your hope for a breast cancer free generation.

The order form can be downloaded here. (AS OF JULY 2013, THIS IS NOT A CURRENT ORDER FORM- PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR CURRENT ORDER FORM.) For more information about placing orders for bulbs call Nancy McHone at 272-2841. All proceeds from the Beyond Pink TEAM’s Plant it Pink sales stay local and are used to provide financial assistance to women with breast cancer as well as other projects of the Beyond Pink TEAM.

The Beyond Pink TEAM is a program of the Cedar Valley Cancer Committee, a non-profit organization made possible by the collaborative efforts of many health organizations, businesses and dedicated individuals’ throughout theCedarValley.  Going beyond pink ribbons, beyond pink light bulbs, beyond pink trinkets; Beyond Pink, we accomplish our mission by Taking action, Education, Advocating and Making a difference.

Beyond Pink TEAM Promotes Breast Cancer Deadline 2020
at My Waterloo Days Dragon Boat Races

Seawel Lori : June 20, 2012 3:21 am : Advocacy, Events, From the Team

The Beyond Pink TEAM ventured into new waters in early June after being approached by My Waterloo Days Dragon Boat Race organizers and was asked to participate. Captain Lori Seawel recruited other Beyond Pink TEAM members, family members, friends and even strangers to fill the boat with a team of eighteen paddlers, one drummer and one flag catcher. Not one on the team had ever participated in dragon boat racing previously and only a couple had ever even seen these boat races before.

Following time trial races, the Beyond Pink TEAM participated in the finals, racing against another breast cancer awareness team, the Fighting Angels Abreast from Fort Dodge, Iowa. In the finals, the Beyond Pink TEAM won three of four races to earn the 1st Place Paddle in their bracket. Team members each went home with a medal.

Captain Lori was very proud of her team, telling them they achieved their two goals for participating in the event, to promote the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s Deadline 2020 campaign and to have fun. It was icing on the cake to not finish in last place amongst all the teams participating. When not racing, Beyond Pink TEAM members roamed the crowd to collect signatures for the Deadline 2020 presidential petition and sold promotional t-shirts as well as colors of cancer bracelets. Later that week, Lori was interviewed by KWWL’s Kera Mashek for their Buddy Check 7 segment to further promote Breast Cancer Deadline 2020. To learn more, see the interview online at http://tinyurl.com/KWWL-interview. To support Breast Cancer Deadline 2020 on a personal level, please sign the presidential petition online at http://tinyurl.com/NBCC-Deadline2020-petition.

The Beyond Pink TEAM thanks Luke Rathe, owner of Luke’s Music Stop on 4th Street in Downtown Waterloo for sponsoring the Dragon Boat Team. Luke’s Music Stop paid the five hundred dollar registration fee, making it possible for the Beyond Pink TEAM to participate.

NBCC Breast Cancer Deadline 2020

It’s time to end breast cancer!

While a great deal has previously been done to increase awareness of the importance of regular screening for detection of breast cancer, previous research and technology have not had a significant impact on reducing breast cancer deaths and diagnoses.

  • Nearly 290,000 women and 2,000 men will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer this year!
  • The chance of a woman developing breast cancer during her lifetime has increased from 1 in 11 in 1975 to 1 in 8 today.
  • In 2012, nearly 40,000 women will die of breast cancer in the U.S. and breast cancer will take the lives of almost 500,000 women worldwide.
  • U.S. breast cancer mortality has been declining but only slightly. In 1991, 119 women died of breast cancer every day. The 2011 estimate was 110 deaths every day.

Recent scientific progress has created an unprecedented opportunity for development of a preventive vaccine. But more funding is needed to support research towards this end and oversight is needed to ensure researchers are sharing new discoveries, collaborating on research projects, conducting research appropriately and reporting results truthfully. It’s time to leverage our nation’s investments to take advantage of the knowledge, technology and tools available to make a real difference. It’s time to change the conversation!

The National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) has set a deadline to end breast cancer by 2020 and has initiated the Artemis Project, creating an infrastructure for collaboration on development of a vaccine. The Artemis Project focuses on taking an unbiased look at what is already known and what needs to be researched to prevent breast cancer in the first place and to prevent metastasis (transmission of cancerous cells from an original site to other sites in the body) amongst those already diagnosed with breast cancer. Collaboration amongst leading breast cancer researchers and advocates from around the country has already begun as a result of NBCC’s leadership. For more information

Four members of the Beyond Pink Team (Christine Carpenter, Jacque Bakker, Lori Seawel and Trish Pedersen) recently attended the NBCC Advocacy Summit which focused on the Breast Cancer Deadline 2020. Team members attended sessions on the science behind breast cancer as well as what’s currently being done in breast cancer research. The summit ended with a Lobby Day. We are happy to announce that all five of Iowa’s representatives in the House and both of our U.S. senators support the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act. This act

  • Defines the important role the U.S. government must play to “change the conversation” concerning research to end breast cancer.
  • Designates primary focus of research to be on the primary prevention of breast cancer and the prevention of metastasis.
  • Establishes the Commission to Accelerate the End of Breast Cancer who will oversee breast cancer research.
  • Help ensure our nation’s limited research dollars are leveraged to accelerate progress already begun.

The Beyond Pink Team members also encouraged all seven of Iowa’s congressmen to talk with their colleagues to encourage them to also support the accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act and to talk with colleagues on the Department of Defense Appropriations Subcommittee to continue to support the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program.

NBCC is asking the President of the United States to publicly commit to work with them to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020. YOU CAN HELP END BREAST CANCER by signing a presidential petition sponsored by NBCC. They have set the goal at 290,000 signatures (number of women estimated to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year). The petition can be signed online at:

http://www.breastcancerdeadline2020.org/act/Presidential-Petition.html

Are YOU with us? Please take a moment to help end breast cancer by signing the petition and spread the word!

Fundraiser

Little Town + Big Hearts = Successful Fundraiser for Beyond Pink TEAM!

Gabbi : August 29, 2012 12:35 pm : Events, From the Team, Fundraiser

Gabbi DeWitt, Beyond Pink TEAM accepts check from Eagle’s Roost employees and event organizers, Joy Crandall and Chantelle Quario.

Beyond Pink TEAM recently got a big boost from the Eagles Roost in Hazleton. Employees at the local tavern held a “Handyman/Cleaning Lady” auction at the end of June to raise money for breast cancer awareness.

“Everybody really got into the spirit of the event,” said Joy Randall, who along with Chantelle Quario, organized the fundraiser. “This was our first year to try this and we were amazed at the generosityand success of it,” said Chantelle.

Randall is a breast cancer survivor and Quario lost her mother to cancer two years ago, so the event had a very personal meaning to both women. It didn’t take long for the auction fever to spread when they started planning the event.

Six women and five men came forward to volunteer to be auctioned off, with Frank Hansel, Randall and T. Trumblee as auctioneers. The event raised $1,425 for Beyond Pink TEAM.

Gabbi DeWitt of Beyond Pink TEAM said, “This is just an amazing total for a first-year fundraiser. We are so proud of these girls and the Hazleton community for coming out in support of this event.”

DeWitt explained funds raised are used in the area to help women pay for tests, gasoline and/or transportation to go to treatments/checkups, etc., and childcare, as well.

Drawings were held for many great prizes donated by area businesses.  Area businesses supporting the event with prize donations and contributions included: Corner Market, Pronto of Hazleton, Studio 17, Mazatlan, NE Iowa Creative Concrete (Pete & Dot’s), VanDenover’s, Rec Room, Styles of Distinction, Hallmark, Woodworks By The Lake, Maurices, Budweiser, Camohat, Ricky’s, Country Cottage, L & M, NE Iowa Auto, ABC Trucks, Pat’s Creations, Eagle’s Roost, SnapOn,  13th Steph, Jean Gallmeyer, InsurDev., GrowMark Tank & Truck Center.

The group at the Eagles Roost in Hazleton thanks everyone for their contributions and participation and looks forward to making this an annual event.

This event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the the Beyond Pink TEAM! We are thrilled that Community Main Street and the city of Cedar Falls continue to support us in such a big way! Without the Pink Ribbon Run we wouldn’t be able to do many of the Young Cancer Survivor activities we do each year or be able to donate as much many back into the community. We have given out over $83,000 in grants since 2008 to women with breast problems or diagnoses of breast cancer! We couldn’t do it without the support of the community!

So tell everyone you know about the Pink Ribbon Run! Online registration is at www.trekmanracing.com….see you in October!!!

Or you can print this form and mail it in.

We can’t wait to see you!

ZUMBA for a GOOD CAUSE

Gabbi : May 1, 2012 3:49 pm : Uncategorized

Spring sprung early for the Beyond Pink TEAM in March when Penie Aalderks and her Zumba girls decided to hold another Zumba event. The Beyond Pink TEAM was thrilled to be the recipient of so much good will and fund raising. The event was hosted at the Hub again in Cedar Falls. So many people showed up to support the cause of helping women in the Cedar Valley.

The event raised over $1700 between donations and the $5 cover charge at the door. Plus the group donated lots of fun items that can be used as nice gifts for women when they are newly diagnosed, or as door prizes for events we host for cancer survivors. The Zumba crew also donated $190 in 10 gift cards. Those gift cards have already been gifted out to women who are undergoing treatment right now. The donation is so helpful to help with the expense of gas and other costs related to daily and weekly treatment regiments.

The Beyond Pink TEAM is so fortunate to have forged many great partnerships in the Cedar Valley, but this one with Penie Aalders and the Zumba group is one of the best.
