Beyond Pink TEAM Promotes Breast Cancer Deadline 2020
at My Waterloo Days Dragon Boat Races


The Beyond Pink TEAM ventured into new waters in early June after being approached by My Waterloo Days Dragon Boat Race organizers and was asked to participate. Captain Lori Seawel recruited other Beyond Pink TEAM members, family members, friends and even strangers to fill the boat with a team of eighteen paddlers, one drummer and one flag catcher. Not one on the team had ever participated in dragon boat racing previously and only a couple had ever even seen these boat races before.

Following time trial races, the Beyond Pink TEAM participated in the finals, racing against another breast cancer awareness team, the Fighting Angels Abreast from Fort Dodge, Iowa. In the finals, the Beyond Pink TEAM won three of four races to earn the 1st Place Paddle in their bracket. Team members each went home with a medal.

Captain Lori was very proud of her team, telling them they achieved their two goals for participating in the event, to promote the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s Deadline 2020 campaign and to have fun. It was icing on the cake to not finish in last place amongst all the teams participating. When not racing, Beyond Pink TEAM members roamed the crowd to collect signatures for the Deadline 2020 presidential petition and sold promotional t-shirts as well as colors of cancer bracelets. Later that week, Lori was interviewed by KWWL’s Kera Mashek for their Buddy Check 7 segment to further promote Breast Cancer Deadline 2020. The Beyond Pink TEAM thanks Luke Rathe, owner of Luke’s Music Stop on 4th Street in Downtown Waterloo for sponsoring the Dragon Boat Team. Luke’s Music Stop paid the five hundred dollar registration fee, making it possible for the Beyond Pink TEAM to participate.
